Each year, RidgeGate teams up with the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District to provide free, guided nature hikes throughout the spring, summer and fall. These hikes are led by professional naturalists from SSPRD, and offer insight and education into the natural ecosystems within the open space at RidgeGate, while offering a chance to get some fresh air and exercise. Hikes are free to the public, but registration is required. Please register below!
September Full ‘Harvest Moon’ Hike
Guides: Cindy and Peggy from South Suburban Parks and Recreation
Hike up to a breathtaking overlook to experience the nearly simultaneous setting sun and the rising moon. Play mind-boggling optical illusion games. Learn how humans see in darkness compared to light and compare our vision with those of animals who rely on their vision for hunting and survival. And, learn why the September moon is called the ‘Harvest Moon’ – and why it looks SO large rising on the horizon! Sun sets at 7:12pm, so we’ll be descending in twilight and by the light of the full moon, using our human night vision. Flashlights for emergencies only, please. Register below, and bring along your friends and family to this moderate 2-mile hike. Kids are welcome, ages 5+ recommended.
Please note – earlier marketing materials indicated that this hike would begin at 6pm. This was an error. Please meet us at 7pm to see the full glory of the sunset and moonrise on our hike!
