Each year, RidgeGate teams up with the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District to provide free, guided nature hikes throughout RidgeGate’s expansive bluffs trail system.

These hikes are led by professional naturalists from the district, and offer insight and education into the natural ecosystems within the open space at RidgeGate, while offering a chance to get some fresh air and exercise. Hikes are free to the public.

A Walk Under the Full “Hunter’s Moon”:Hunter’s Moon – look with the eyes of a hunter.  Follow in the footsteps of native and early Americans looking for deer in the moonlight. Learn why this moon seems so big and colorful. Hike up to a breathtaking overlook to experience the rising moon (6:40pm). Parts of the trail are steep, so wear appropriate footwear and bring walking sticks as needed. We’ll be descending in twilight after a sunset at 6:29pm, by the light of the moon, using our human night vision. Flashlights if you choose.

Meet at the parking lot on the south end of the baseball fields at Prairie Sky Park, on the north side of Crossington Way. We’ll walk the Willow Spring Trail, so expect a moderate to a briefly steep incline with little to no shade and a path that doesn’t accommodate strollers well. Come dressed for the weather with sturdy walking shoes, drinking water, sunblock, hat and insect repellent as desired.
