Each year, RidgeGate teams up with the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District to provide free, guided nature hikes throughout RidgeGate’s expansive bluffs trail system.

These hikes are led by professional naturalists from the district, and offer insight and education into the natural ecosystems within the open space at RidgeGate, while offering a chance to get some fresh air and exercise. Hikes are free to the public.

Living off the Land – Finding Native Foods Around Us: Native Americans found edible plants all around them. Some surround us today on the Willow Creek Trail. We’ll see plants that could be eaten or used for a variety of purposes by people in the know.

Meet at the parking lot on the south end of the baseball fields at Prairie Sky Park, on the north side of Crossington Way. We’ll walk the Willow Spring Trail, so expect a moderate to a briefly steep incline with little to no shade and a path that doesn’t accommodate strollers well. Come dressed for the weather with sturdy walking shoes, drinking water, sunblock, hat and insect repellent as desired.
