Each year, RidgeGate teams up with the South Suburban Parks and Recreation District to provide free, guided nature hikes throughout RidgeGate’s expansive bluffs trail system.
These hikes are led by professional naturalists from the district, and offer insight and education into the natural ecosystems within the open space at RidgeGate, while offering a chance to get some fresh air and exercise. Hikes are free to the public.
A Walk Under the Full “Sturgeon Moon”: Sturgeon Moon – from bygone days. Where did that name come from? A naturalist will share origin stories of various astronomical wonders. Hike up from the base at Bluffs Regional Park to connect into the East-West trail to experience the rising moon (7:54pm). We’ll head up in daylight so you’ll be able to find the spot again. Sunset’s at 7:49pm so we’ll descend by the light of the full moon. Flashlights if you choose.
Meet at the Bluffs Regional parking lot off of Crooked Stick Trail, south of Lincoln and off of Ridgegate Parkway. We’ll walk the Bluffs Regional Trail, so expect a moderate incline with little to no shade and a gravel path that doesn’t accommodate strollers well. Come dressed for the weather with sturdy walking shoes, drinking water, sunblock, hat and insect repellent as desired.
